Hello all.
I was lucky to have a 68 coupe as my first car back in 1977. It was very special to me.
It cost $1200 and the loan had 14% interest! The payment of $75/mo was pretty easy to make even back then.
In 1981 I sold it because I needed a more reliable car. I always wondered what happened to it. When my father passed away a few years ago, I found the file with the loan paperwork, and of course the VIN was shown.
So, last month I headed down to DMV to see if they could tell me where it was. The answer was "no record". But the lady there suggested I write the archives and see if there was an old record. I did that and a couple of days ago got the last buyer's name. The date of the last registration was 1988.
After some digging I found his phone # and gave him a call. Yep, he bought the car, did a little work on it, then put it in a storage container on his farm. It sits there to this day!
He says it has only very little surface rust. It even has the chrome traction bars I put on there in 1979. So, I'm currently attempting to purchase it from him. At that point, I'll be trying to figure out what level of restoration to do. I don't want a show car, just a weekend driver. But I'm reluctant to replace a large % of the parts because it's mine, you know? I'm pretty good with a wrench, but I've got a lot to learn.
So, I'll keep you posted on what happens. Should know something in the next month or so.
In the meantime I'd like to come help or watch a classic restore project in the Tyler area.
Thanks for this forum.

Roger, welcome to the MOET Forums. That's a great story on your '68. Best of luck on getting it back. That would be fantastic.
We have another member here who has a similar story where he owned one of 100 '68 1/2 428 SCJ coupes, 4-speed and was Highland Green. He sold it and regretted immediately. He looked for it for 20 years or so and never could find it. One of our MOET members accidentally found it in a pasture close to Tyler. He bought it back and is now doing a concours restoration on it.
And what David already said, meet up with the MOET gang on Saturday morning for breakfast and check out the numerous restorations that are going on.

Roger - thanks for the story about you first car. That is really cool. I have talked to a lot of people over the years who would like to do just what you have done - find their first car. I was told by the DOT that they didn't keep records past twenty years. How did you contact the "archives"? I went on the TXDOT web site and nothing like that showed up.

Roger, I just checked out your profile and your website and I find we have several things in common. Great website, BTW.
Besides being into Mustangs, I see you're into Engineering. I work for a small Engineering firm in Flint and we specialize in control systems mostly for the Petro-Chem markets.
The best is that your birthday and mine are exactly the same. I too was born on 10-31-61 here in Tyler.
Welcome again to MOET my Spook brother!

Hello JDAMach1, that's cool we have the same bdate. I'm not too far from Flint.
Well, I have the car in my garage now. First thing I'm going to do is take pictures before starting disassembly.
I would really like to connect or meetup with some of you that have done this before. So shoot me an email.

They DO keep records past 20 yrs but they are archived and you have to fill out a form and send it in. Call 903-753-6279 then press 4. They will send you the form. Or apparently, you can go to Longview and do it in person.
I thought for sure my car was crushed since it's a lowly coupe, or rusted through in a backyard somewhere. But no, it was sitting in a storage container for 20 years just waiting for me. Yeah, I can't believe it either.
Here's a picture of it coming out of the container in OK.

That's great that you were able to work a deal on the coupe!
